Happy Halloween

It’s that time of the year when carved out pumpkins adorn window ledges and houses are decorated with all kinds of creatures of the night. Children dress up in scary costumes before heading towards their neighbour’s front door and declaring ‘trick or treat’ in the hope of securing some sugary goodies. It is of course the time of Halloween, a celebration marked across the globe on the night of 31 October.

The origin of Halloween is the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which celebrated the end of summer and the harvest and marked the beginning of winter. The Celts believed the boundary between the living and dead blurred on this night, allowing spirits to return to Earth. They lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off spirits, and the traditions evolved over time. The Christian church later moved All Saints’ Day to November 1, and the evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, or Halloween.

Please remember to keep your children safe in these uncertain times you never know what is lurking in the dark or around every corner.
