Number of Councils Housing Migrants Set to Hit Record Levels – Critics Call It a ‘Disgrace’

The number of UK councils accommodating asylum seekers is set to reach an unprecedented level by the end of this year, according to newly released Home Office documents. Currently, 82% of local authorities provide housing for migrants, but this figure is projected to surge to 92%, meaning almost every council will be involved in dispersal schemes.

The government faces mounting pressure as it seeks to close costly migrant hotels, which currently cost taxpayers nearly £145 per person per night. In contrast, dispersal accommodation—such as houses, flats, and bedsits—costs around £23 per person per night. Despite these efforts, the Home Office still needs to secure housing for more than 66,000 asylum seekers, with a shortfall of nearly 20,000 spaces.
Regions such as London, the South East, and the South West are expected to absorb almost 40,000 individuals, while the North West has already exceeded its target, housing over 17,000 migrants. Officials are exploring alternative sites, including former military bases and abandoned properties, to meet demand.

Critics have slammed the plans as a “national disgrace,” arguing that the government has “lost control of our borders” and is forcing communities to bear the cost. Shadow ministers warn that the influx will strain social housing and public services at a time when many British families struggle to find affordable homes.

The Home Office insists its strategy considers local capacity, GP availability, and social cohesion. However, with asylum claims and Channel crossings at record highs, the debate over housing migrants shows no sign of easing.
As one senior MP put it: “This weak government has no plan to stop the boats, and now almost every community will pay the price.”
