Hunt on for Epping hotel asylum seeker, jailed for sexually assaulting girl, after accidental release

Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, a 38-year-old Ethiopian asylum seeker, was released. He had been serving a 12-month prison sentence for sexually assaulting a woman and a 14-year-old girl in Epping, Essex. Kebatu was convicted in September on multiple charges, including sexual assault and inciting a minor to engage in sexual activity.

How Did the Mistake Occur?

Kebatu was intended to be transferred from HMP Chelmsford to an immigration detention centre, from where he faced deportation. However, due to a paperwork error, he was mistakenly released instead of being transferred. As a result, a prison officer has been removed from their duties while an investigation into the incident is underway.

Where Is He Now?

After his mistaken release on Friday, 24 October, Kebatu boarded a London-bound train from Chelmsford at 12:41. As of the latest reports, he is “at large in London,” according to Justice Secretary David Lammy.

Government Response

Justice Secretary David Lammy stated he is “livid” and “appalled” by the error, labelling it “totally unacceptable.” An urgent investigation has been ordered, and Lammy has urged anyone with information about Kebatu’s whereabouts to call 999.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also condemned the mistake, emphasising that Kebatu “must be caught and deported.”

Police Action
Essex Police, the Metropolitan Police, and British Transport Police have launched a
major manhunt to locate and detain Kebatu.
