Somali migrant sentenced to life in prison for fatal stabbing

A Somali migrant was sentenced to life in prison for fatally stabbing a man in a Derby bank after his asylum claim was rejected. He calmly walked out of the bank following the attack.

Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, a 47-year-old Somali national, murdered Gurvinder Singh Johal, a 37-year-old father of three, inside a Lloyds Bank branch in Derby on 6 May 2025. The attack occurred shortly after Nur had angrily complained about his refused asylum application. CCTV footage showed Nur calmly leaving the bank after the stabbing.

Key Details:

• Victim: Gurvinder Singh Johal, a restaurant owner from West Bromwich, was withdrawing money to pay staff when he was attacked.
• Perpetrator: Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur had arrived in the UK via small boat and paid £400 for the journey. His asylum claim was rejected because he had arrived “voluntarily”
• Threats Prior to Attack: Nur called the charity Migrant Help less than two hours before the murder, threatening to kill 500 people and expressing anger at the UK government.
• Criminal History: He was known to police in Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg for offenses including assault and robbery. He had also been arrested in the UK for public order offenses.
• Court Outcome: Nur pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years. Judge Shaun Smith KC described the murder as a “brutal and callous act”
