This month the leaflet is a petition against Post Office closures.
With 2,500 branches to be closed by the Government by the end of this year many areas will see their local Post Office disappear. This is something of particular concern to villages and deprived urban areas where other small shops survive off passing trade brought into the area by the Post Office.
Post Offices are the heart of many communities and provide far more to an area than just stamps and envelopes. By their closure many people will be forced to travel further and the elderly, many of whom rely on local Post Office services, will be totally isolated.
This leaflet serves two important purposes – firstly it tells people we are opposed to the closures, and most likely we will be the only party that can credibly say this.
Secondly, the leaflet will bring in names of people, via the petitions, who are politically minded and are interested in community politics.
If we are to succeed in the Euros in 2009 we must not only champion our anti-EU policies, but also be at the forefront of local community campaigns in our areas.
Hopefully this leaflet will help your branch or group to begin organising community based groups which will serve as a bedrock of support in future elections.
