I suppose some scary extremist upswing on the Balkans is to be awaited if Turkey is allowed into the EU… The balkan peoples are quite fierce, and there are few things dearer to them than the pushing-back of the Osman Empire during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Not only will the immediate consequences be out of hand if Turkey is let into the EU (a population of more than 70 millions? – that's either a record growth, or huge number of people from hellholes flooding in, aiming for Europe), but the reactions amongst us Europeans might finally be let out of hand, violently so.

Turkey's access must be barred.

Very true. Often quite desperate women, who are overwhelmed by the attention they get. I have seen very young men in their early 20's or so, creeping around much, much older women. It's just a passport to them.. I can guess you've seen plenty of it on your travels!

The inclusion of Turkey will be the final death knell. It has to be stopped. The only consolation I can offer right now – and possibly contrary to what members might have thought – police on the Schengen borders to the outside world are now very tough and thorough. I know: I live right by such a border and I have been stopped many a time while going about my business and had to show my identification. The message has been very clear that they do not want unwelcome guests. If only British authorities could show the same attitude. The EU often gets the blame for a lot of things but much of this rot is in the British government's own back yard.

I think we need a new mindset. All the letters I read revolve around the word "if" turkey is allowed into the EU. We must recognise there is nothing to stop it joining. It's a foregone conclusion Turkey will be apllowed to join and Britain (and Europe) will be futher flooded with immigrants not only from Turkey but from every Asian/African hellhole that the Turks allow into their country and give citizenship too. So sitting waiting for it to happen or to go away or waiting for a BNP government are not soutions. Incidently is "Turk" a derogatory description? Do you think we might have to call them "Turkeys"?

You're so right, petefield. 9/11 was the warning shot. they're too sneaky and underhand to declare it openly.

We were warned about the new Millennium – but got the year wrong. 2001 was the correct first year of the new millenium.
