Sacriston's name has a fabulous history. The area has been populated since the Bronze Age but the first written record of settlement dates back to the 13th century when it was known as Sacristan's Heugh (meaning a shaft in a coal pit or a hollow in quarry). According to old maps it was once known as Segerston Heugh and is now known to local people as Segga. The farm and manor house was once the residence of the Sacristan, a monk who held that office for the monastery at Durham Cathedral. He was responsible for providing everything necessary for the services, bread, wine, vestments etc., and for repairs to the cathedral, probably paid for by exactions on the coal-mining. Apparently, little evidence of the mining operations now remains, with the area around the former coal mine having been landscaped and turned into woodland. Sic transit gloria mundi. Let's do our best not to let the cathedral become Islamified!
