I think it was Thatcher in the 80s who was a consultant for the road hauliers association, she then began the systematic crippling of our railways. So even if their investment in her "consultancy" was in the millions of pounds, the billions they have received in revenues since has had some handsome returns!!
Tebbit became a director of BT after it was privatised, so many of these parasitesof all parties in "wasteminster" are on the same gravy train !!!

The railways apparently find it difficult to operate at a profit because of competition from trucking companies --who use the public road system as their "tracks" . So the next time that you are passed by a 10-wheeler carrying a 40-ton load at 90 MPH on the motorway, remember that that vehicle is also destroying the railways. While I hate recommending yet another law, it makes sense to ensure that all long-distance freight is carried by rail rather than road. As for passenger rates, they would come down if more people could be persuaded to get out of their cars and also use rail for longer trips. I am positive that trains run in high-population density corridors would not only prove convenient, safe and fast, but could be operated with reasonable costs-- and the tickets would consequently be very reasonable in price.

I have (or had) a keen interest here. Having completed a wek's work experience on British Rail in 1990, shortly before it was fully banished and privatised, I had the chance to talk to senior railwaymen, some of whom were 50 years on BR and they advised me against a career in the railways. They were very circumspect, even in 1990, of the plans from the top to offer out franchises to operators, effectively taking everything that was British Rail (except the logo) 'out of house'. Stations, rolling stock, even car parks were suddenly owned by profit mad private firms. When I was there I'd play about with the ticket machine to find out how much the fares generally were. OK, they were'nt cheap. I've done the same now on NRE's site and am amazed at the cost. Let's have it back in-house.

That price comparision is absolutely astounding and shows that something is very wrong. It is not however just confined to Britain. The car is at the root of this problem and is part of the reason that railways have put all of their efforts into hauling freight and have deliberately shunned their passenger service. There is no doubt in my mind that government ought to be encouraging the passenger side of the business by ensuring that safe high-speed trains operate the length and breadth of the British Isles. With encouragement and efficient oversight passenger volumes would increase and fares diminish to the point where they would once again be reasonable. It would also be better in terms of the use of fuel as the railway represents a far more efficent user of scarce energy.

Cheaper to travel to the other side of the world than to travel within the UK,says it all really.
This is what the privatisation of public transport has become,UNAFFORDABLE to the working class, while executives and shareholders sit back and rake in the exhorbitent profit.

This is all part of the nwo plan, this "privatisation" has occured in all countries,so that the elite can get thier hands on the resources of this planet, rail fares are meerly a symptom of it,we are being systematically robbed of everything, including our nationality, yet the sheep continue to vote for more dis-enfranchisement,it is time to get very very angry and force a change.

Turfoot, I was thinking of permit controlled travel in communist countries when I wrote my comment. In our case travel seems to be controlled by pricing it out of most peoples' pockets but the effect is the same.

Brown is still sticking to the reason our troops are in Afghanistan that it is keeping UK streets safe from the Taliban. I have never seen any evidence that says the Taliban want to come here. Their domain is Pakistan with their sights on Afghanistan not the UK. I thought we were supposed to be fighting the terrorist organisation al Qaeda which are already in the UK plotting our downfall and the spread of Islam.

Ah ' the tory and labour greedy scum constantly telling us to use public transport while forcing us out of our cars with extortionate taxes and draconian laws. The fact being its just as expensive ' if not more so to use any transport other than private ' unless you can get your whole family to go to the coast on push bikes that is.
There's also the fact that while Bliar / Brown plc and co spout off about us using public transport they fail to tell us where the public transport is. I don't know of any ' its all been privatised. I'l bet you can get a taxi from Newquay to Kyle of Lochalsh for around the same price as the train ' if not less.
I've said for years the aim of government for the last 30 years is to keep us all stuck in our slums and ghetto's
only coming out to stand in the rain waiting for buses ' work all day to let them steal our wages and then go home . Much less spare time to socialise or do anything at all then.
The only destination the government are interested in is theirs with ALL our cash.
We ought to start helping each other more with transport like the politicians tell us. Lifts ' car sharing / lending 'do all we can to help out . Above all boycott the railways ' the fatcats and greedy shareholders will lose out and then bankruptcy will be a blessing ' we can renationalise them for free then by just taking them over to save them.

Yet another instance of the British people being sold out so that big business can make a big profit - with us being told that it was for the good of the country.

In a densely populated country like Britain, a joined up Rail Network is of vital importance. What we need is to get people out of their cars, therefore reducing the need for petrol, and onto Public Transport. The more people that travel by Public Transport, the less need for new roads, less need for oil, less congestion and less pollution. Both Labour and the Conservatives have paid lip service to this common sense solution to Britain's congested roads, environmental degradation, air pollution and reliance on oil imports. But we see that their interest was purely lip service - they have never had any intention of doing what was best for Britain, their only interest was to appear to have those intentions while actually helping their friends in big business.

If the Railways had remained a Nationalised Industry, there were plenty of easy solutions to the problems that existed when it was, but the politicians were not interested in these easy solutions, they were only looking for reasons to make their objective of privitisation possible and to make it appear to be the only reasonable solution. So we now have the ridiculous situation of a Publicly funded Rail Network, where the people who fund that network (the tax payers) have to pay exorbitant amounts to use it. The worst of both worlds for the ordinary people of Britain - but, the best of both worlds for big business. How strange that successive Conservative and Labour governments, elected to represent the people of this country and to do the best thing for the country, have managed to screw us while enhancing the profits of big business?

As others have pointed out, almost every other advanced country in the world has an efficient Nationalised Rail Network, where the people who pay for the network (the tax payers) get to travel cheaply and quickly. We have the exact opposite - we pay for the whole thing in subsidies, then pay through the teeth to use it, and are lucky if we get anywhere fast. But like everything else in this country, the whole set up has been created so that some fat cat can get even fatter, with the assistance of tax payers money. Of course, by then forcing people to continue to travel by car, the government can then punish us with 'Congestion Charges', parking charges and fines, toll charges, road tax etc. Whatever they say, it really doesn't benefit them for us to travel by Public Transport, so what do they care about the whole mess?

If the Railways had remained a Nationalised Industry, there were plenty of easy solutions to the problems that existed when it was, but the politicians were not interested in these easy solutions, they were only looking for reasons to make their objective of privitisation possible and to make it appear to be the only reasonable solution. So we now have the ridiculous situation of a Publicly funded Rail Network, where the people who fund that network (the tax payers) have to pay exorbitant amounts to use it. The worst of both worlds for the ordinary people of Britain – but, the best of both worlds for big business.

We have the exact opposite – we pay for the whole thing in subsidies, then pay through the teeth to use it, and are lucky if we get anywhere fast.

Spot on. I've been saying for years 'there is more than one way to skin a rabbit' and the high cost of travel by any means, together with lack of public transport is just another form of control and isolate people, and keep them ignorant. At least Communist countries were more honest - you had to get permit to travel to another city.

Just a laugh, news tonight keeps going on about Brown saying he won't support a corrupt Government (Afghanistan) - endemic corruption is the phase used I think. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. What does he think his government is. You can't teach anyone something you don't know/do yourself.

Both Cornwall and the Kyle of Lochalsh are financially dependent on tourism and what better way than arriving by train, its environmentally friendly, and synonymous of the Great British holiday,

Yet now you have to be on the MPs 'gravy train' to make such a journey.

This was in the Gaurdian today.....'The actor Emma Thompson has urged a university to work to stamp out racism after her adopted son endured "unpleasant" experiences while studying there. Thompson says Rwandan-born Tindyebwa Agaba suffered because of the colour of his skin during his first year studying politics at Exeter University.
Thompson claimed the leader of the BNP, Nick Griffin, would "love" the area because of its relative lack of racial diversity. The Oscar-winning actor had been taking part in a project at the university called One World, aimed at celebrating diversity. On Thursday, during the debate entitled ALL AFRICANS NOW: Artistry and Activism, a member of the audience said "What can we do to change the WHITENESS of Devon and Cornwall?'
