Iraq was/is about oil; Afghanistan is about gas; a certain pipeline planned to run from Khazakstan through Afghanistan and Pakistan and then into Europe. Look up Trans Afghanistan Pipeline on the internet; this is why our finest are being blown to bits whilst our cowardly leaders appease Muslims. They cant beat the Taliban so they will do deals with them to get their pipeline built.

EnglishLady. I agree with every post you make! The borders of the UK are the North Sea, English Channel, Bristol Channel etc. These are the borders we should be protecting. Mr Brown should know that we no longer have an empire in India, the North West Frontier, etc.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Western governments (that are supposedly fighting the taliban in Afghanistan) are also the ones that are responsible for the car bombings in Pakistan, then blaming "islamic extremists" for the atrocities. The Western governments then use the car bombings in their favour to justify their presence in the region.

For centuries hemp was used for rope. Indeed it was synonymous with rope. There's a conspiracy theory that hemp was bad-mouthed when synthetic fibres were invented, as a deliberate anti-competitive move. So although oak and hemp would be correct historically, maybe we'd have to settle for oak and nylon, and move with the times.

I think English oak would be a good choice of timber. Our island was protected by the finest navy in the world with ships made from this species. Of course, that was when Britannia ruled the waves.

Whether fortunately or otherwise, the British forces leaders seem collectively to have about as much ability as politicians. In all the time I can remember, from the Cuban crisis, Vietnam, Biafra through to Iraq, the chaos around Serbia, Zimbabwe, and Afghanistan, I can't remember any senior military figures saying anything remotely significant. This includes nuclear issues – I have great doubts for example whether Pakistan, and Israel for that matter, in fact have nuclear weapons. Ever since the start of World War 1 the military have made every impression of dumbness, in both senses.
