I checked out the Holyrood system – it's impressively complicated, and has an amazingly large number of seats for the population of only about 4 million. There are 129 MSPs in total (these are Members of the Scottish Parliament). There are 73 constituencies, with one first-past-the-post MSP. The other 56 MSPs are selected by the d'Hondt method – 7 MSPs from each of 8 regions. This is the same system that the EU uses (and which gave the BNP two MEPs…. sorry about the acronym soup). Obviously if the leading parties in a region all got 14% ish, they'd each get 1 MSP. There's no way to fix a winning percentage, but David's presumably informed estimate of 5% – 7% sounds right. (The Greens got 2 MSPs with 4% – but the table I'm looking at is so confusing I'm unsure where these were). As with the EU there are complications caused by having two separate voting papers.

Conclusion: the BNP could get seats in May 2011. I hope this will be in addition to Westminster MPs.

The bnp just misses out on saving it's deposit and the tories just hang on to thier deposit, something fishy going on there me thinks.At least the vote share % was maintained
if not slightly increased..

Sorry to say this; I can’t understand why Labour got so many votes after destroying Britain and using Scotland as a dumping ground for bogus asylum seeking free riders.
If this trend continues then the British Isles is finished. Wake up! Vote BNP.

any by-election result where we can beat a mainstream party is a good indicator that we are moving forward, however i feel scotland will be tougher to make any sort of gains compared to the rest of the UK, there is still a lot of historical resentment to win over.

The only thing that den of thieves in Westminster is united over is crowding that door to keep it shut. They know that with one foot over the threshold there would be all hell to pay and revelations galore. Why do you think they are desperately trying to pass laws to keep MEPs (ie certain ones) out of the Houses of Parliament? It's the same in the European Parliament. Every hurdle they can throw in our way, they do it with gusto, but it just makes the BNP box more clever.

The SNP's hope of an independent Scotland is now a busted flush. The bail-out of the Scottish banks with British taxpayers' money has shown everyone in the know that Scotland couldn't survive on its own – another recession like this one would send an independent Scotland back to the Stone Age. The United Kingdom is better off united.

You are spot on. Liebour were always going to win that seat, and will again in next years GE quite easily. Liebour have held that seat, and others up here for over 70 years, its the "I always vote labour" mentality like you say. Just for the record Alex Salmond and his SNP cronies are even worse! As I have said before, its bad up here, but nowhere near as bad as many English cities and towns, but when the immigrant hordes start to overwhelm Scotland the tide will change quicker.
One thing, just in case any of you know. The article says 23 Scottish seats will be contested in the GE next year, will the seats in Edinburgh be contested? I dont want to waste time walking to the polling station if I cant put my cross next to the BNP.

As I stated in a previous post……the comments of 'Glasgow needs more enriching in order to get a bigger BNP vote'….well I could throw that back at Londoners who have been swamped beyond comprehension by 'enriching' and as yet have not voted in a BNP MP. So…..that 5% for the BNP in a stronghold of Labour is unbelievably good given that 5 years ago the BNP would have polled 0.1%…..we need to be patient and build.We also need to remember that every time the media talk about the BNP they call us 'far right and extreme….'….not really a vote winner is it.We are fighting not just the lib/lab/con garbage but the whole media establishment who hate us more than we can ever know.

First and foremost congratulations to bnp on this result. I think bnp were the real winners they gained the most seats out of all the parties with the least resources. So mush for Lib Dem big words on question were the only party to have gained seats of the bnp haha bnp thrashed them in this election. Do they know why i don't think they do because bnp is going out there and fighting hard for the people, all they con/lib/lab elite do is sit behind there desks and do nothing. The only reason Labourer won that seat back was because there afraid of the conservatives getting back in power i'm guessing so Michael Cameron better not get to comfortable.

Its a start for the BNP in Scotland coming join third with the Torys, well give or take a few votes.
Thing is Glasgow NE is a Labour strong hold and has been for 70 years, they also put a lot of money in to their campaign. Turnout was 32% and that is the lowest ever in a Scottish by-election.

David Kerr (SNP) : 4,120 (20%) – (Up +2.34%)

Ruth Davidson (Conservative) : 1,075 (5.22%)

Charlie Baillie (BNP) : 1,013 (4.92%) – (Up +1.68%)

Eileen Baxendale (Liberal Democrat) : 474 (2.3%)

David Doherty (Green) : 332 (1.61%)

Total Electorate Eligible to Vote : 62,475
Turnout : 20,595 (32.97%) – Down (12.84%)

Well done to Mr Baillie an increase never the less, Liebour can't throw that sort of money at every signal constituency across the UK in May 2010.

This is a brilliant result by the BNP in Scotland which really gives the Tory Party (and the Labour Party) something to think about nationally. The fact that the BNP achieved this with small resources compared to the Tory Party shows that there is a wind of change blowing across British politics called the BNP. I am sure that more and more resources will become available to the BNP as every month goes by, and more and more people get behind the BNP, and that in the not too distant future the BNP will become the government.

Ian, I reckon it may be worth putting money on those odds, because they could shorten as June approaches. Can it really be true they think only 500,000 votes? Even though the BNP got nearly a million votes this year in a Euro election where turn outs are lower? Again, this shows it might be worth a bet, because someone at Paddy Power might not be doing their sums correctly.

In any case, whatever happens will be a good result, because the role of the BNP for the next few years is probably not to be taking power as such, but almost certainly to be just getting in the faces of the establishment, letting them know they can't just do whatever they want, keeping them honest. And the BNP have been doing that already very effectively.
