Some years ago, whilst in the USA, I happened to have a long and interesting conversation with an officer of the US Navy.

The subject of Lord Nelson cropped up, and the American officer told me that when he was at the USN's officer training academy, Nelson's tactics were still taught as examples of perfect strategy and tactics. After all that time . . .

They don't make them like Lord Nelson any more.

I see the BNP is at it again; hijacking British symbols that celebrate our past history. I am sure the Royal Navy celebrated this day, but just looked at the websites for Lab/Cons/Lib Dems., not a mention although the Libs do have 2 items on Diwali. Why not, but no mention of Trafalgar Day. I have not seem the tv today and read only one paper, no mention in there. Anybody seen it on tv?

i think if you take them to trafalgar square and tell them it is a statue of nelson . they will probably say what nelson mandela has only one arm?. especially as the south african embassy is just over the road

What a wonderfull article and a great man to never forget. Everyone living in Britain should be educated with our history and culture first before learning about other culture. I wonder if this has been spoken about in mosques and temples (Nelson)

Happy Trafalgar day to all of you out there, the BNP "family", but pause a minute to count the cost of that victory.
Many of the sailors that lost there lives were pressed men, landsmen who had been caught by the press gangs and forced to serve.
The midshipmen were often boys of twelve, but they captained guns that weighed two tons.
I offer a thought/prayer for all that have lost their lives to protect our wonderfull land and those who are puting their lives at risk needlessly right now in illegal wars for political ends. God bless them all.

As you say daiwill,they were British Spitfires,the Polish air force was made up of old bi-planes,but the bravery of all the polish pilots was unmistakeable. When in a dogfight,instead of firing from 150-200yds,they would get to under 50 to make bloody sure of their 'kill',very brave souls indeed!!

Our youngsters are taught about divali from the age of 4 years – terrible! I hope they are taught about Nelson and the battle of Trafalgar too.

It does not matter who the pilots were they were all RAF. The Polish also formed an Armoured division which fought in France, but it fought under the command of Monty with British tanks.

I've often thought that the empty plinth in rafalgar Square ( which is behind Nelson's column as he looks down Whitehall) should have on it a statue of a politician from one of the major parties creeping up on Nelson ready to plunge aknife between Nelson's shoulder blades.

These creeps have betrayed everything he devoted his life to and died for, and are the very antithesis of the man of patriotism, courage and honour he was.

They have the cheek to criticise a typing error in an email from the BNP when in the first line of their article they have a glaring spelling error. They have spelt controversial as controversal. A bit pathetic for a high-brow broadsheet. I have screen-shoted the page so if they try to chance it I have the proof.
