I think you forget sir, that the English and Welsh were bitter enemies no longer than 100 years before the battle of Agincourt. If you ever visit Wales and wonder why there are so many castles and forts (Of what have lasted), then it's because of the war between England and Wales.
The men descripted on this page were NOT fighting for England, they were fighting for money. They were simply mercenaries fighting for the English. The act of union between England and Wales hadn't been signed until 100 years after this battle.

Exactly! My thoughts exactly. If these people are such a great benefit to the British, then why the hell arethey not in their own countries being a great benefit to that country? Mind you, I suppose the aid goes much further if more of them are here.

I read that book many years ago. Ray Bradbury is a good writer of speculative fiction. Have you read ‘Fugue for a darkening island’, by Christopher Priest? A depressing tale about a near future civil war in Britain under circumstances very similar to these days. Below is a link to a review on the book. It was written in 1972.

Henry V was a great leader who should be reincarnated to help us out now.
I think he would jump out of his grave if he saw the state of UK today
all the great rulers must be turning in their graves..even victoria

The present denial of our history and our determination to keep our past alive often puts me in mind of the theme of Farenheit 451. For those unfamiliary with the story. The state had reduced the population to drones and because books contain knowledge and history they were by law to be burned. However, small groups of people thought this wrong and damaging so they memorised one book each. As they would eventually die they would verbally pass it on to be memorised by somebody else. In this way they sought to keep knowledge and history alive for the time when people would awakening from their torpor. Farenheit 451 is the temperature at which paper burns and it is fiction. But I do see parellels.I see parellels hOWEVER SMALL GROUPS OF PEOPLEFar it alive

I believe it was after the battle of Agincourt that all English prisoners captured by the French had their two main right hand fingers chopped off. So that they could never shoot a longbow against the French again. Ever since one of the most insulting gestures an Englishman can make to the French has been to raise two fingers with the back hand facing outwards, as opposed to the victory sign with the palm of the hand facing outwards. It’s called ‘giving the bird’, because of the feathers on the end of the arrows. After that, whenever an English army faced a French army, the English lads would all hold up two fingers to let the French know what they where about to receive. A favourite old saying was, ‘confusion to the French’, and a rain of arrows certainly caused confusion among them. Now, I say, ‘confusion to the EU’.

I left school in 1960. From the comments on here and not just on this occassion I have no idea what and how British history is currently being taught. It does sound as if much is being ignored. I am genuinely interested to know when you left school and just what you were taught. I am not alone in that.

The Long Bow a fearful weapon and still is. The way things are going with our scumbag leaders it wouldn't surprise me to see our brave soldiers being equipped with them in Afghanistan. At least they wouldn't jam I suppose.
