Our subpostmaster keeps hoping his family-run branch survives each wave of closure threats. My posts are under 'onthebeaches' now, but I speak for the Family of course! The solemn tones on the wireless inspired me; fight them we did then and fight them those of us with the heart would do again. Also, how refreshing to realise there is strong, articulate reason on these pages to TRY to restore what's ours - this you can resolve yourself with when faced with such shameful events recently. I think our forefathers would frequent these very websites, wouldn't they! We speak now what they did with more freedom generations past. Keep up the fine posts!

No sign of Adam Crozier amid the chaos, you notice. What does he think about one of the last standing bastions of recognised Britishness resembling just another big corporation in meltdown? He came from the F.A and has done the same for the Royal Mail. I absolutely detest the appointment of these assumed big business names heralding the bogus message they have a clue (or, worse, interest) about turning them round. Bring it back in-house and cheer the rural Subpostmasters up who fear for their jobs. Anything we British value, Westminster deliberately flogs off, usually in dubious circumstances.

WHAT??? the NHS is privatised , or partially at least, disgraceful , so will we say to say 85 year old Mrs Smith, who HAS contibuted her fair share , that her hip op is not going to be profitable, as she'll probably have say up to 10 more years of life, but we allow young immigrants to come and parasite off our NHS.

As a part time postman in the north west let me tell you what I have seen. If you are full timer you are walking dead. any chance they get to have you out of the door they take it. They got all the postmens walks and made them all bigger so instead of say 100 postmen now they only need 90 ( covert job cuts ). So now it takes longer to do the walk but if you go over you have to beg for the o/t. As someone who sees this day in and day out Royal Mail is purely about trying to make money. END RESULT PRIVATISATION.

Nice to have it put straight to us about what's really going on within Royal Mail.
How can Crozier earn £3 million a year when he has no idea what the front-line Royal Mail staff are put through, or do. No wonder the company is going to pot.

Exposing the Royal Mail.

Once upon a time, long long ago the Royal Mail would deliver first class mail the day after posting, not any more, now, if a postman is off sick for any reason chances are there are no spare staff to deliver the mail for that particular round so it goes undelivered, for sometimes up to a week.

Sorting offices have also been closed right across the country, in the majority of cases, the sorting office was also the delivery office which the postmen and woman would work out of to complete their rounds, now, they have the be shipped in from main sorting offices elsewhere to carry out the delivery. This has also meant that either their bikes have to be brought with them or they are stored in Lock Up Garages local to the delivery area along with an assortment of mail, registered parcels, letters and so on. This would not be too bad if the garages were kept locked, but often they are not, leaving the heaps of undelivered mail exposed for all to see.

Frequently, parcel deliveries that cannot be taken out with the usual letter delivery are going undelivered due to no staff for sometimes up to three weeks, so if you are waiting for a special parcel containing a present for someone else's birthday, chances are the birthday will be long gone before you get it..

Most of the delivery staff are now part time, the few full time postal staff are being replaced as soon as they retire, with temps, and if they are not due to retire for some time life is made difficult in the hope that they will leave of their own accord. This of course is a perfect way of not adding to the pension sceme which will evenutally as has been said above, be scrapped, it also means that the Royal Mail can hire and fire at will.

Will the once proud Royal Mail be restored to what if was, a system envied across the world, somehow i very much doubt it, will everyone live happily ever after?

I think we all know the answer to that.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with that but when they go on strike do you think they will have any sympathy or even give a passing thought to those less fortunate than themselves.? My comment had nothing to to do with capitalism. As for the CWU being the culprit, well that's true but a union is only a union because of its members.

Here's my twopenneth....
My local postie doesn't want strike, strikes don't pay bills.
Unfortunately the PO has to modernise, after all we're not digging for coal with picks and shovels or 2 firemen pumpping a pump at a fire!
I sure the biggest cuts could be in middle and top management, the PO like a lot of public sector jobs is full of deskbots feathering their next... ground troops do the work!
And finally, Unions have had their day... no doubt the union rep will still get paid, and if he doesn't he'll have plenty in reserve, unlike the lambs he'll be leading to the slaughter!

Me too, I've always had time for our postmen. I would've thought that online shopping has increased mail deliveries, rather than decreased, If you're like me I hate trawling round shops, (yes I HATE shopping, unusual for a girlie) and I find online shopping muh less stressful. That's why I think deliveries down another goverment ploy to falsify the figures, to sell off Royal Mail.

Royal Mail is part of the malaise that affects all our public services these days, including the NHS, education, and our utilities etc. Public services simply cannot be run as and by private enterprise because profit will always take priority over service to the people. They are also liable to aggressive takeovers by other private organisations, especially from foreign investors. We only have to see our electricity companies are now largely owned by foreigners to the detriment of our own population in the form of obscene prices for energy which keep the costs down for the foreigners. EDF, EON etc spring immediately to mind, charging much higher prices in Britain for energy while those energy costs for the French and Germans are much lower. Electricity, gas, water, transport on roads and rail should be considered as essential to national security, (which is the French attitude) and kept under the control of British governments, with the necessary funding to ensure they are run cheaply and efficiently for the benefit of the British citizen.
