Finally — Financial Times Journalist Writes Sensible Immigration Book
Reflections on the Revolution in Europe – Can Europe be the same with different people in it? by Christopher Caldwell, reviewed by Tim Rait.
The title of this amazing book says it all and it deals with “immigration, Islam and the West.” Here we have, possibly for the first time, a sensible book written by a mainstream journalist (the author is a columnist for the Financial Times) which deals honestly with the origins, conditions and consequences of immigration into Europe. He does face the facts.
The headings to the various chapters give one an idea of the issues. Some of the headings are: The rights and wrongs of Enoch Powell, Civilization and decadence, Diversity is overrated, How postwar immigration came about, Is immigration for natives or immigrants? Welfare and white flight, Asylum and democracy, Fear masquerading as Tolerance.
He refers to the BNP in only one paragraph of the entire book, something he may need to add to in future editions. However, he is fair on Enoch Powell and shows how very accurate he was in his predictions.
However, he does see the serious failings of our democratic states, in which democracy has failed to reflect popular opinion. “If Europe is getting more immigrants than its voters want, this is a good indication that its democracy is malfunctioning.”
“Western countries are supposed to be democracies, accountable to voter assessments and preferences, and all Western publics believe they have too much immigration.”
He shows how claims that we are an immigrant nation are false, and he reveals that we now know that the British “stock” has changed little until recent times.
He indicates how the weakness of the West allows its land and its culture to be usurped, and he writes “It is possible to say that Europe’s decision to welcome millions of foreigners was made at a time when it was not of sound mind and body.”
Quite apart from telling it as it is, this book is a superb source of facts and explains the moral and intellectual failings of our society that are now putting our very survival at risk.
