In each case the ‘liberation’ was applauded by many people: Africa and the Indian subcontinent being slowly ‘liberated’ though with, of course, immense chaos which if anything is getting worse. Similarly the Algerian War was regarded as atrocious at the time – though the critics didn’t not say the same about the far worse Vietnam War. In each case there has been huge disillusion, caused as much as anything by population explosions.
