Some 3,500 unaccompanied minors, some as young as three, were literally dumped at UK ports last year, costing the British taxpayers at least £150 million. Given current projections, the numbers look set to top 4,000 this year, as they are now coming in a rate of around 75 a week.
The rising numbers mean that local authorities and council taxpayers face bills of £150million a year to support and educate them, generating warnings that next year’s council tax bills will rise because of the influx.
Further costs borne by the NHS and central government bring the total bill to £165million.
Around a third of the children coming into Britain without parents or family are from Afghanistan, with many also arriving from Iran, China, Eritrea and Somalia.
The Home Office figures triggered warnings from council chiefs, whose authorities are responsible for providing places in children’s homes or with foster parents, and who face costs for schooling, translators and social workers.
Kent county council, which looks after children arriving at Dover, said they present “significant financial pressures.”
The figures showed that 3,525 unaccompanied children aged 17 or under arrived last year, a level 16 percent up on 2005. More than half were teenagers of 16 and 17.
A quarter were aged between 14 and 15 and more than one in ten were under 14. A three-year-old was found alone at Southampton Docks. In Hampshire, 68 youngsters under 18 were found abandoned at Southampton docks and airport and even service stations in the last year.
Authorities are estimated to be supporting a total of 8,000 asylum seekers under 18. A spokesman for the UK Border Agency said a child would not be deported unless there was contact with their family or an arrangement for their care.
The top ten nationalities of unaccompanied child asylum seekers in 2007 were: Afghan - 1,135; Iranian - 360; Chinese - 315; Iraqi - 305; Eritrean - 280; Somali - 200; Bangladeshi - 125; Pakistani - 75; Nigerian - 70; Sri Lankan - 65.
