Just a brief snippet from this morning’s Financial Times that your news team would like to share with you.
Thursday’s by-election in Henley-on-Thames, a solid Tory seat outside London, was never expected to go Labour’s way. But still Labour MPs felt a particular horror at the sight of the party failing to beat the BNP, the first time it has ever failed to outpoll the far-right party.
“My first reaction was to head to the library with a glass of whisky and a revolver,” said Stephen Pound, a Labour MP from London. Tessa Jowell, Olympics minister, said she “felt sick”.
We understand a large number of Labour MPs, particularly those having small majorities, expressed similar sentiments.
