BNP Fighting 650 Seats on 1 May

April 4, 2008 - By Simon Bennett

With nominations closing at midday on Friday 4th April the British National Party will be fielding around 625 candidates for seats in District, Borough and Unitary Councils in England.

For the first time the BNP will automatically qualify for a Local Election Party Political Broadcast. The criteria is that a sixth of available seats must be contested within England. The figure set by the BBC was 458 seats, so the British National Party is actually well ahead of this level.

The number of seats being fought constitutes a remarkable total not least because many councils that have previously been contested are not holding elections this year. Congratulations are in order for all Agents, Organisers, Candidates and all those who assisted in obtaining nominations over the past few weeks.

Full slates (where every available seat on a council is being contested) are expected in, Southend-On-Sea, Basildon Thurrock (all in Essex), Broxbourne (Hertfordshire), Leeds, Birmingham and Sunderland.

The BNP will also be contesting approximately 30 council seats in Wales and two council by-elections in London, all on May 1st. This is the same day on which the BNP will be contesting the elections for the Mayor and Assembly of London.
